Chapter Fifteen

It’s nearly four and I haven’t seen him all day.

When I got to work this morning, Jen gave me a supportive thumbs up from across the room. After the conversation we had on Saturday night, I was ready to have an open and honest conversation with Jackson. The problem is, I can’t do that at work. There are too many eyes and ears.

So I wait for my opportunity and do what I was hired to do. Which is good, because I need the distraction. I even took my lunch to the break room in the hopes he might find me there when he passed by. But he never did. The only communication I’ve had from him is an email requesting a rough draft of the end-of-year report I should be working on. He wants it on his desk by the end of the day. Of course, he does.

I could email him back and tell him I need to speak to him, but using our interoffice network for that seems shady. This would be so much easier if I had his personal number. A simple text could have cured half the anxiety swirling around inside me. All I can do is wait for the perfect opportunity to catch him alone in his office. At least I have an excuse to interrupt him.

At four thirty, I’m in the middle of proofreading the document when Jen stops by my desk.

“Working late?” she asks, but I see the gleam in her eyes.

“Yeah, I need to finish this before I head home.”

“Don’t work too hard.” She winks. “I’ll see you tomorrow. Text if you need anything.” Her voice drops low. “Good luck.”

After she leaves, I wait for the rest of the office to empty. Slowly my coworkers vacate their desks and head for the elevator. The moment Gladys passes me wearing her coat and hat I make my move.

I print the document and put it in a new folder. With a deep breath, I make my way down the hall toward his office, my heart pounding in my chest.

With a nervous glance, I check my reflection in the mirrored panel running along the wall. I’m wearing red trousers paired with a cream blouse and a dark green cardigan embroidered with a poinsettia. With Christmas right around the corner, it felt natural to spread some holiday cheer. Now I wish I had worn something a little sexier.

One knock on his office door earns me a summons. Jackson glances up from his desk, peering over a pair of dark-rimmed reading glasses. He takes them off when I step into his office.

“Miss Astor.” He sets the paper aside, along with his glasses. “To what do I owe this pleasure.”

My face warms at the inflection of his voice when he says the final word. “I have that report you requested, sir.”

He stands and rounds the desk. I offer the file as he approaches. He takes the folder and sets it on his desk.

“And here I thought you missed my company.
